Bible Study for Effective Family Leadership
Reading the Bible is for followers -- Bible Study is for leaders!
Over the past few months I've discovered a method of Bible study called the inductive method and I'm amazed at how well the basic ideas mesh with the principles of effective leadership.
The Bible was written so that we can grow in our knowledge of God and how He interacts with us, connect with Him on a personal level, and then to intentionally influence (lead) other people to do the same thing.
Here are the basic parts of this study method --
- Observation -- This involves reading the Bible with the eyes as well as the mind. It's not magic, it can be understood, and it's personal. Don't wait for some great teacher to tell you what to believe. Read it slowly and carefully.
- Interpretation -- It's not what I think, what I feel, or what other people have said. Most of the time observation will be enough make the meaning clear but at the end of the day it all boils down to taking the time to study the context and the culture involved to really understand what's intended.
- Application -- Once I understand what's being said and what that means, I'm responsible for personal application in real life. The goal of Bible study is a transformed life and a real relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
As a direct result of applying these principles to my Bible study, my effectiveness at leading my family is increasing exponentially.
I'm growing in personal confidence and developing the qualities of love, peace, and self-control. I'm connecting with my wife and children on a deeper level and I'm intentionally influencing them to dig deeper into their own spirituality and relationship with God.
