Christian & Athiest Agree on Principle of Human Behaviour

As a student of leadership, and a committed Christian...

...and I discovered to my surprise recently that I agree with an equally committed atheist on at least two things....

  • 1. We both believe that human beings should behave in a certain way
  • 2. We both acknowledge that human beings don't always behave that way

At the risk of making enemies among my "brethren" -- I believe I'm a better leader because of this agreement.

As the person responsible for leading my family in matters of faith, I spend lots of time gathering and reading faith related information. One of my favorite blogs in this area is Friendly Atheist.

I find the information presented there both challenging and thought-provoking as I attempt to consistently grow in my personal faith, and communicate that faith to my family.

The Atheist Position

This blog post references a proclamation for a Citywide Day of Reason signed by all of the New Orleans City Council Members -- A partial quote..........(emphasis mine)

"...incorporating a commitment to the principles of reason, tolerance, morality, democracy, and human rights for the first time in history and enabling ethical interactions among people;"

and

"....hope that we may resolve the many challenges facing humanity, whether environmental, military, economic, or social, and the specific challenges facing post-Katrina New Orleans,"

The Christian Position

In the Bible, Paul puts it this way......(Romans 7:19) "For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing."

Looks like Hemant and I both agree...

there's a way to behave -- and mankind in general....just ain't behavin'

I know that we differ on what the ultimate solution to this problem is but for today at least, we agree on the basic problem that faces the human race.

And I think that's awesome!

P.S. To be fair -- please be sure to read both the entire Friendly Atheist post and the Romans 7 passage.

P.P.S. Where Hemant and I strongly disagree on the fact that Christianity is an extremely rational & reasoned faith. Check out this resource for more information..........

2926X: Mere ChristianityMere Christianity
By C.S. Lewis / HarperOne

Arguably the 20th century's most influential Christian writer, C.S. Lewis sought to explain and defend the beliefs that nearly all Christians at all times hold in common. His simple yet deeply profound classic, originally delivered as a series of radio broadcasts, is a book to be thoroughly digested by believers and generously shared with skeptics.
