5 Components of an Effective Exercise Program
One of my favorite leadership dads -- John F. Kennedy once said that "Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity."
As a work at home dad, I have, at different times, either neglected my health entirely or pursued an unbalanced training program -- focusing entirely on one form of exercise or obsessing about what does or doesn't go into my mouth.
Effective physical fitness is more than just keeping up with the demands of working and leading our families. It means getting and staying in above average physical condition so that you have the energy to effect the form of those demands.
Here are five things to consider when deciding how (not if) you should pursue physical fitness....
- Strength --
Over time, your exercise and nutrition program should make you stronger, not weaker. This seems obvious, but some training programs and diets actually weaken muscle strength. - Endurance --
If walking around the block or climbing a set of stairs leaves you panting for breath you can understand why building endurance is so important.- Flexibility --
Being able to move quickly and easily without throwing your back out or pulling a muscle is important. It's difficult to spend time working, playing catch or building a lego monster if you're laid up in bed.- Moderation--
Extreme dieting increases focus on your body instead of your family. Does it make sense to spend hours planning, buying, preparing, serving, cooking, and eating exotic foods when you could be talking with your teenager about her plans for life?. The idea is to eat (anything you want) when you're hungry and stop when you're satisfied. - Functionality--
It's important to look good, naked or otherwise, but the focus of physical fitness should be more about increasing your energy levels so that you can do anything necessary to serve the needs of your spouse and children.
Physical fitness is an area where it's pretty easy to preach and not practice but it's a foundational aspect to a successful work at home experience.
Make a decision to pursue balanced and above average health. Take daily action to make it happen! Your customers and your family will thank you for generations to come.
