Family Man Fool with his Pants on the Ground!

Just like any self-respecting family-man,father and husband, the last thing I want is to have a horrible marriage and to send selfish, disrespectful and rude children out into society. That’s why a recent episode of American Idol was so fascinating to me.

I was watching American Idol with the wife and kids when this funny old black guy walked on stage and started singing about "pants on the ground". It was incredible funny and once again America is fascinated with something silly...but it got me thinking..."

As a husband & father, are my "pants on the ground?

What are those "punk like" things I might be doing that are causing me to look like a fool and eventually destroy my family and any leadership credibility I might have?

I'm drawing from Great Leadership one of my favorite leadership blogs and unfortunately from my own experience to suggest the following:

The top 5 "pants on the ground" moments for husbands & fathers:
  1. Arrogance and Insensitivity -- It really doesn't matter whether you yell loudly or belittle quietly, no marriage or parent/child relationship can thrive under the leadership of an arrogant jerk. "pants on the ground!"

  2. Not Listening -- Not paying attention when your wife or child is speaking is just a subtler way of being an arrogant jerk, even if it's unintentional. "pants on the ground!"

  3. Being Manipulative -- If you treat your wife & kids like game pieces in your selfish game of "perfect family-man", it proves that your merely a con-artist. Keeping everyone guessing about your true intentions breeds mistrust, and can eventually lead to divorce and abandonment. "pants on the ground!"

  4. No Integrity -- Lying, cheating, passing the blame, making excuses for your stupid mistakes... "pants on the ground!"

  5. Selfishness -- "Me first!" -- "Obey me or else!"....Hat turned sideways AND Pants on the Ground!"

Grow -- Become aware of your "inner punk". Develop the leadership skills necessary to influence others without demanding that they follow you or make you look good.

Connect -- Make friends with someone who's not afraid to tell you when your pants are on the ground. In the Bible it's called the "belt of truth".

Lead --As you learn the life skills and develop the relationships necessary for effective leadership be sure to intentionally teach your children how to do the same.
