With all the enrichment classes available, parents have to choose some over others based on their budget and needs. Unfortunately, English enrichment classes are sometimes overlooked and are not considered as important as other enrichment classes. Many parents assume that since the kids communicate in English, they don’t need to be enrolled in an English enrichment centre.
However, rather than making a blanket decision can be counterproductive, especially when you don’t consider the child’s needs. Instead of making assumptions, the following signs will tell you your child needs an English enrichment class.
Poor Performance
One of the main telltale signs of a child’s need to attend an English enrichment centre is their performance. However, while this is an obvious sign, parents should observe performance patterns. Are the child’s underwhelming grades consistent? How is their performance compared to the rest of the class? If their English grades are below average, they probably need that English enrichment class.
Some students may score well in grammar and vocabulary, but they may also be struggling with sentence structure and comprehension. If this student gets support in the problem areas, their overall performance will increase significantly.
Stagnated Grades
A child whose grades have plateaued needs to attend an English enrichment class. Even if their performance is above average, if they appear to be “stuck”, parents should seek help in an English enrichment centre. The tutors may find ways to help the child unlock the challenges and their potential, especially when they are putting a lot of effort, but it isn’t paying off.
Careless Mistakes
If your child’s teacher often remarks that your child would excel if they avoided careless mistakes or if they paid more attention to their work, they probably need to attend an English enrichment class.
What is interpreted as “carelessness” may be a sign that the child is struggling with grammar, comprehension, or lacks proofreading skills. The English enrichment centre will identify the reason behind these mistakes and help the child develop skills to boost their performance.
Behavioral Clues
How is the child’s attitude towards English? How do they behave when they have English homework? If the child puts off doing the homework until the last minute, it is either because they don’t like the subject or they think it is too easy and isn’t worth putting in much time and effort. It may also be a sign that the child has low confidence in the language.
Other behavioral clues that show a child needs to attend an English enrichment class are:
- Anxiety when preparing for English exams.
- Disinterest in reading English literature.
- Forgetting to do English assignments.
- Negative self-talk regarding the subject and assignments. For example, a child may claim English is too boring, too difficult, or they may even claim they hate writing compositions.
Limited Vocabulary
How often does the child use the same word in conversations? If their statements appear repetitive, both in speech and writing, chances are they have a limited vocabulary. Sometimes children fall back on statements, such as “I don’t know”, when they are struggling to communicate. Some children will use the wrong words in a conversation.
These are some of the signs parents can use to send their child to an English enrichment class. Parents may need to be keen to notice some of these indicators, but when discovered early, the child may get the right support to improve their grasp of the English language.
